Known for his rich sound and expressive versatility, Ivan Cheung is an award-winning bass trombonist whose artistry has gained international recognition. He currently serves as Bass Trombonist of the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra and Trombone Instructor at the Tampere University of Applied Sciences in Finland.
Ivan earned his Master’s degree from the Hochschule der Künste Bern, where he studied under the tutelage of Ian Bousfield. He received his Bachelor of Music (Honours) with First Class Honours from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, studying with Zachary Bond. In 2022, he was awarded the Lady Fung Music Fellowship from the Asian Cultural Council, supporting his participation in the Aspen Music Festival and School.
A passionate and dynamic performer, Ivan has been recognized by the International Trombone Association, winning their Edward Kleinhammer Orchestral Bass Trombone Competition (2022) and the Donald Yaxley Bass Trombone Competition (2021), along with top prizes in the Southeast Trombone Symposium S.E. Shires Solo Competition and George Roberts Bass Trombone Competition.
Ivan has performed with leading ensembles including the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Pori Sinfonietta, and the Pacific Trombone Project, and has collaborated with renowned artists and conductors such as Marin Alsop, Hannu Lintu, Steven Mead, Jörgen van Rijen and Bryn Terfel.
