Leonel Rodríguez Cambronero began his musical studies in Barva de Heredia, Costa Rica, with Professor Humberto Vaglio. He continued his education at the National Institute of Music and the University of Costa Rica, where he earned his Master’s Degree in Music with an emphasis in trombone under Professor Peter Ellefson of Indiana University.
He is a member of the prestigious chamber ensemble Trombones de Costa Rica and serves as director and trombonist of the group Rumba Jam.
He is the recipient of the National Music Award (Chamber Music, 1997), the Special Prize of the City of Passau, Germany (1999), the Asociación de Compositores y Autores Musicales Award (ACAM 2021) for Best Tropical Music Album, Latin Music for Trombone Ensemble, and the ACAM 2022 Award for Best Instrumental Album, A Tribute to John Williams.
He is also a highly active recording session artist, participating in numerous national and international productions. He has released three solo albums: Latin Music for Trombone Ensemble (2021), A Tribute to John Williams (2022), and Christmas Memories (2025).
Currently, he serves as professor and researcher at the University of Costa Rica, Pacific Campus, where he teaches trombone, euphonium, and tuba, and directs the Big Latin Band and the Symphonic Band.
As a trombonist, he focuses on the performance, research, and teaching of Latin American music. He combines traditional and contemporary repertoire with a strong educational vocation, appearing as both performer and educator in concerts, masterclasses, and workshops for young musicians. He is an artist for the Edwards Instrument Company.
