Michael Lo is an Australian freelance musician and educator based in Melbourne. He has performed as a guest musician with notable ensembles and productions, including the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Royal Melbourne Philharmonic, Melbourne Opera, the rock band Foreigner, and Hans Zimmer Live. As a soloist, he gave the world premiere of Hendrik Hofmeyr’s Trombone Sonata and is committed to presenting Australian premieres of new works for trombone. Michael also has a strong interest in arranging and concert curation, exploring new ways to present music to audiences.
Alongside performing, Michael is a dedicated music educator, teaching both instrumental lessons and classroom music across Melbourne. His students have gone on to pursue tertiary music studies, earn music scholarships to prestigious secondary schools, and achieve success in both local eisteddfods and national competitions. He has also taught at the Melbourne Youth Music Summer School and the Victorian State Music Camp.
Michael holds a Bachelor of Music (Honours) from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music and a Master of Teaching in instrumental and classroom music from The University of Melbourne. His teachers include Don Immel, Jessica Buzbee, Ben Lovell Greene, Ming Yeung Li, and David Palmer, and he has undertaken further studies with internationally renowned trombonists such as Peter Moore at the Hamamatsu Academy in Japan and Jörgen van Rijen at the Punto Arte Festival in Italy.
He is a member of the 2025 Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Academy and a recipient of multiple awards and scholarships from the University of Melbourne and Melbourne Youth Orchestras. Michael is proud to be an Edwards Instrument Artist, performing on their tenor and bass trombones.
Outside of music, Michael enjoys exploring Melbourne’s multicultural food scene, scouring local markets for the best produce, and experimenting in the kitchen with varying degrees of success.
