Jay Evans
Principal Trombonist, Alabama Symphony Orchestra
Jay Evans joined the American Classic Trombone Quartet in December,
2002. He has served as principal trombonist of the Alabama
Symphony since 2000.
Jay credits his mother, a bassoonist, and father, a lesson financier,
with providing the necessary discipline and support to pursue
a career in music. After spending most of his early years in
Sioux City, Iowa, Jay's first job was as principal trombonist
of the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra. After receiving a degree
from the University of North Texas, he moved to New York City.
While there, he freelanced and performed with the New York Philharmonic,
Metropolitan Opera, American Symphony, New York City Opera National
Company and the Broadway musical "Miss Saigon."
Jay was a Fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center and worked with
such notable conductors as Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa and
Jeffrey Tate. He was also a participant at the Spoleto Festival
Due dei Monde.
While based in New York, Jay traveled extensively throughout
North America, Japan and Australia with "The Music of Andrew
Lloyd Webber in Concert," starring Michael Crawford and
Sarah Brightman. Soon afterward, he began a five year tenure
with the internationally acclaimed Dallas Brass, performing the
'middle' voice on the alto and tenor trombones and bass trumpet.
Memorable guest solo appearances included performances with the
New York Pops in Carnegie Hall, the Philadelphia Pops at the
Academy of Music with Peter Nero and the Cincinnati Pops with
Erich Kunzel.
