Darrin C. Milling

Orchestra

Darrin C. Milling is principal bass trombonist of the São
Paulo State Symphony Orchestra (Brazil) and professor of
low brass at the Center for Musical Studies of São Paulo
(Centro de Estudos Musicais – Tom Jobim – ULM). He
is also Cofounder of the US-based Low
Brass Project chamber ensemble
and performs with the Brazil-based BelMill recital
duo. Darrin has recorded for Decca, BIS, Argo and BMG labels,
appeared on Maryland Public Television with the Baltimore Symphony,
recorded a European Television promotional with The Philadelphia
Orchestra and, at present, appears frequently on TV Cultura in
Brazil with his current full-time orchestra.
Milling was born in Baltimore, Maryland and began formal musical
studies on tenor trombone at age nine while attending The
Peabody Preparatory. During his freshmen through sophomore years at Baltimore
School for the Arts, Darrin began to study bass trombone and
had his first concert tour abroad, to Taiwan, with the Greater
Baltimore Youth Orchestra. Following high school, Milling received
his B.M. from The
Curtis Institute of Music (Philadelphia) and
continued with masters studies at the Esther Boyer College of
Music of Temple University.
Darrin previously held bass trombone positions with the Pennsylvania
Opera Theater Orchestra, Haddonfield Symphony (NJ) and, former,
Bridgeton Symphony Orchestra (NJ). Milling had been offered one-year
contracts with both the Virginia Symphony and Charleston Symphony
Orchestra, and he was engaged as a per service musician with
the Naples Philharmonic (FL) for several seasons. Darrin has
also performed regularly as a substitute musician with The Philadelphia
Orchestra among other professional ensembles throughout the U.S.
and abroad. His most notable concert experiences were those with
maestros Christoph Eschenbach, Riccardo Muti, Sir Simon Rattle,
Wolfgang Sawallisch and Yuri Temirkonov.
Milling's teaching, conducting and administrative experiences
include former posts as Resident Camp Director of Luzerne
Music Center (Lake Luzerne, NY) and professor of trombone at Wilkes
University (Wilkes-Barre, PA). In addition, he has presented
masterclasses at Tanglewood Music Center (BUTI), New World School
for the Arts (FL) and conducted brass ensemble, as well as orchestral
sectionals, at Brazil's International Music Festival of Campos
do Jordão.
Darrin is an active soloist and chamber musician having performed
in numerous concert halls in various regions throughout his career.
Since assuming his orchestral post in Brazil, Milling has appeared
as guest soloist with the Pennsylvania-based Chester Community
Concert Band (courtesy of Getzen Instrument Co.) and São
Paulo State’s Youth Symphonic Band (Brazil) among other
highlights.
